Clan MacDougall People

John MacDougall of Lorne
John was the son of Alexander MacDougall of Argyll, and led the army that battled with Robert I and his men at Dalry on 11 August 1306. Robert was defeated, the Brooch of Lorne torn from his plaid during the fight, which Alexander claimed. In 1308 John held Innischonnel Castle for Edward II.

Robert had the better of John at the Pass of Brander in 1309, where the MacDougalls were defeated trying to retain the pass for the English.  South-west of the river are piles of stones which are said to mark the graves.

Duncan MacDougall, Lord of Lorne
Grandson of Dugall, Duncan built Dunstaffnage Castle with his brother Ewen. In 1309 the MacDougalls were on the wrong side of Robert the Bruce and Dunstaffnage was taken by him.

Duncan later had Ardchattan Priory and church begun in 1230. Standing on the north shore of Loch Etive, it was built of local granite for the Valliscaulian order.
